Women in Non-Traditional Careers

From Rhetoric to Reality, South East Asia and the Pacific

Profiles Fijian women who are pioneers in their field, who challenge traditional roles for women and raise the expectations of the next generation of female engineers, lawyers, farmers and politicians. Nazhat Shameen was appointed Fiji’s first judge in 1999. 8 women are now representatives in Parliament. The profiles pay tribute to women’s progress, as many of them enter areas of work that have been traditionally ‘out of bounds’. But the presence of only 2 female students enrolled in electronics and engineering at the Institute of Technology and only 2 senior police officers, leaves a lot more work to be done.
