The Thin Line

From Rhetoric to Reality, Latin America and the Caribbean

Gabriela is 65. She has been a paper gatherer for 20 years and earns about $US2.00 a day. She is bringing up her three granddaughters alone in Sao Paulo, the third largest, and the second most violent, city in the world. She tells her story with dignity and speaks of her faith and hopes for the future. But this portrait of a day in her life, collecting card and paper in the streets, exposes the stark contrasts between the Sao Paulo rich and poor and the struggle to cross the line that divides them.
