In Britain in the year 2000, signs of prosperity are everywhere. But not all sectors of society are benefiting, and retired people all over Britain are living near or below the poverty line. Older women have been particularly marginalised by a pension system that assumed they would be looked after by their husbands. Many women who didn’t fit into this uncomfortable category because they were single, divorced, widowed or had few savings, feel they have become invisible. In “The Invisible Old” two of these women, pensioners living on the bread line in a wealthy country, challenge us to take a look at their lives.
